  • How do I identify which guides are on my fishing rod?

The part number for all guides are laser etched on the inside of the front leg. Sometimes this number can be hard to see if the rod builder has applied epoxy that covers this area.

  • Which is better, ball bearings or bushings?
    • Winthrop ball bearing and bushing assemblies are both high quality and smooth rolling, however they differ slightly in performance. A bushing assembly will last longer, require much less maintenance and cost less. Nothing rolls like a ball bearing, however these require annual inspection and maintenance. Ball bearing assemblies are not recommended for deep drop tips.
    • See our cartridges for a full description of each assembly type.
  • Which is better, X-Caliber vs Excel guides?
    • The Excel guide series is an improved design compared to the discontinued Xpress guides and is available with ball bearing or deep drop bushing assembly.
    • The X-Caliber guide series features design improvements over to the Excel guide series. These improvements include reduced weight and a flex-frame that gives a little when the rod is under stress. The X-Caliber guide series also features the bushing assembly.

  • What direction should the guides be facing?

Winthrop guides are designed to have the roller side facing toward the angler and the support-frame toward the rod tip. On our stripper guides, this means the side with the lower roller faces toward the angler and the upper roller faces the rod tip.
